This is the first in a contemplated series abstracts all the names that appear in the loose estate files of persons who died in Guilford County from 1778 up until 1890. It includes all deceased individuals who left loose estate records from surnames beginning with U to surnames beginning with Z. Included are the name of the deceased, the date of the earliest document in the file, and the names of all administrators/executors, heirs, creditors, debtors, guardians, securities on bonds, purchasers (at personal property sales), slaves, and witnesses. Property is often described in detail along with interesting testimony revealing family relationships, disputes, key life events, and migrations. Many women, young men, and people of color are named. All land plats and signatures found within the files are imaged and included. When finished, this series will constitute one of the best sources for the names of Guilford County’s late eighteenth and nineteenth-century inhabitants. 202 pages.
